HB 1229 passes first hurdle

Colorado HB 1229 has been passed out of committee on a 7-4 party line vote. (For a refresher on what HB 1229 does look here.)

I saw the hearing. They trumped out the usual types - relatives of folks murdered by murderers, police chiefs - even had a bona fide retired revenuer there - some asshat name of Chipman who claimed to be ex-atfeieio. (This joker actually mentioned he was an "operator" while testifying for this intrusion upon our Rights).

I thought about live blogging the thing but it was just too depressing. 2 hours of testimony on each side then amendments then the vote. Our side had some good witnesses testifying, and even the republican legislators did a good job of asking pointed questions about this bill. The NRA was there, as was the RMGO and some other gun groups. (Needles to say "hunters for gun safety" wasn't what I'd call a gun group.) Interestingly the rep from the CBI admitted that over 50% of the appeals to background check denials were approved. Not 50% of denials, just of those who appealed their initial denial.

But it was passed.

Next step is on to the appropriations committee and then to the house floor.

Now it's back to watching them debate the magazine capacity limit. The things I do for y'all...
