Massive Pet Food Recall Part Two

The previous post on the pet food recall can be found here.

There've been a few additions to the brands previously recalled:

"Nestle Purina PetCare Co. said it was recalling all sizes and varieties of its Alpo Prime Cuts in Gravy wet dog food with specific date codes. Purina said a limited amount of the food contained a contaminated wheat gluten from China."

"Hill's Pet Nutrition said late Friday that its Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry cat food included the tainted wheat gluten. The FDA said the source was the same unidentified company. Hill's, a division of Colgate-Palmolive Co., is so far the only company to recall any dry pet food."

The FDA believes it was melamine that contaminated the wheat used to make the pet foods in question. They're also checking to make sure that none of the tainted wheat made it into human food.

I heard on the radio the other day (though I haven't confirmed it) that as many as 400 animals have been made ill by the contaminated pet food & about 20% of those have died. The pet food companies only acknowledge a handful. (Which could be plausible as a lot of dogs & cats get food from more than one source through foraging & hunting).
