The Rev. Al Green & Lyle Lovett did a decent cover of this tune for the Rhythm, Country & Blues album CD. Then again a lot of folks have covered it; Elvis, Johnny Cash, The Spinners, Brooke Benton, Leon Russell, Brenda Lee, George Jones, B.B. King, Tenessee Ernie Ford, Tina Turner, The Dave Mathews Band, etc. It's a Willie Nelson song & Willie does a more thoughtful version than most but I almost seem to recall Ray Charles covering it as well (though a quick search comes up with nothing to verify that). If I'm not just imagining it then Ray's version would be the one I'd recommend, otherwise check out Willie's recordings of it.
Speaking of time slipping away go over to Say Uncle's site & tell him that 35 is not that old. It's his birthday & he's claiming he's hit middle age. So please tell him that ain't so - & not just cause I'm less than a week behind him.
I never heard Ray Charles' recording of it, though I figured it might have been on Modern Sounds in Country And Western Music. Willie's rendition makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck, though...
