Heheh. Going through this month's American Rifleman, I see a half-page add for for the new .416 Barrett cartridge. It's being debuted in their Model 99 rifle. Oddly, I didn't see a press release at the Barrett website about it, but you can bet it'll start showing up on the gun boards pretty soon. Judging from their ad, it seems pretty clear that this is a kick in the crotch to the blissninny California legislature for banning the .50 BMG. I think I have to get my scanner hooked up so I can post the ad. The top line says, California HERE WE COME!, and here's the copy:

Rifles chambered for the new .416 Barrett cartridge are now available for legal purchase by all law-abiding US citizens and their state and local law enforcement agencies. Even those of you living in California. The .416 Barrett shoots flatter, faster and is inherently more accurate than even our own .50 BMG rifles.
I found a thread at Benchrest Central Forums which mentions the .416 Barrett:
I have seen a sample round on the 50BMG case necked down to .416", called the Barrett. Word is Barrett is frantically trying to get these rifes into production and plans to sell them first in California.
That post is from April of last year, so I'm a little surprised that a Google search turned up so few results.

Figured I'd check a few boards. Found just a mention at The High Road.

Kudos, once again, to Ronnie Barrett. I wish I could afford to buy a rifle from them. He deserves all the business he can get for sticking it right back in the gun banners' faces. (Figuratively, of course, because, as we all know, you should never point a gun at anything you do not wish to shoot ... errr,
