For three days now I've heard about the gun turn in program running in LA. I could fisk the AP article covering the event, but I'd be preaching to the choir and it gets old. But there's this one part that makes me think the woman is too stupid to have a gun anyway.
Charlene Watt planned to turn three shotguns into a plasma TV.She got $300 for her three shotguns. Looking at the cheapest plasma tv at Wal-Mart, she's $1,398 short. And California hates Wal-Mart, she'll probably pay more. There's no telling if her guns were worth more. But anyone who actually believes they are getting a deal at these things probably shouldn't own a gun anyway. I just hate that a) the guns are melted down and b) it gives the opportunity for criminals to dump guns they may have stolen and used without any paperwork.
The two were among dozens of gun-toting residents who converged on a shopping center parking lot Saturday to anonymously swap firearms for gift certificates as part of a program aimed at reducing violence in this crime-plagued city.
Each was rewarded with a $100 gift card for Circuit City or the Ralphs supermarket chain, the program's co-sponsors.

If my stolen pistol showed up at one of these stupid "buy-backs" and it got a hit on NICS, would they give it back to me, it being my property and all? Didn't think so.
Also, if it's all anonymous and everything, wouldn't it be a pretty effective method of ditching a murder weapon?
