Sen. Feinstein introduced S 2498 this past Thursday. There are currently 11 co-sponsors & I'll list them in the extended entry.
Updated 6/7/04
The bill was read for the second time on Friday & is now on the senate legislative calander under general orders. Not quite sure but I believe that just means it's fair game to be voted on by itself or as an attachment to another bill.
The title of the damned thing is A bill to provide for a 10-year extension of the assault weapons ban. So it looks like she's just going for a repeat of the original AWB with a 10 year sunset included. The text of the thing hasn't appeared on Thomas.gov yet but there's usually a few days between a bill being introduced & the text being published.
Here are the bastards who co-sponsored Difi's bill:
Sen Boxer, Barbara - 6/3/2004 [CA]
Sen Chafee, Lincoln D. - 6/3/2004 [RI]
Sen Clinton, Hillary Rodham - 6/3/2004 [NY]
Sen DeWine, Michael - 6/3/2004 [OH]
Sen Dodd, Christopher J. - 6/3/2004 [CT]
Sen Jeffords, James M. - 6/3/2004 [VT]
Sen Lautenberg, Frank R. - 6/3/2004 [NJ]
Sen Levin, Carl - 6/3/2004 [MI]
Sen Reed, John F. - 6/3/2004 [RI]
Sen Schumer, Charles E. - 6/3/2004 [NY]
Sen Warner, John W. - 6/3/2004 [VA]
Many thanks to Librarian who clued me in on this over at The High Road. He even went to the trouble of prining the NRA e-mail alert he received where he learned of S 2498. Again, much gratitude to him.
I'll post more when it happens. For the time being it seems like DiFi just wanted to get the preliminary red tape out of the way so she could spring this thing anytime she wants. She might try something next week, she might wait till September. The second I know anything I'll post it. This isn't anything presing right now, but calling your senators (even if they're anti-gun) wouldn't hurt. & be prepared to make many more phone calls about this.

Bartolomew Roberts of the High Road has dug up the Senate rule that explains the Senate Legislative Calander. (It's a pdf. file you have to download.)
Mr. Roberts give us a nice summation:
"The bill does not have to go through committee because it is substantially identical to an earlier bill that the committee has already reported on (the 2619 amendment to S.1815).
The bill having been read twice and placed on the general calendar can now come up for a vote at any time. If there is any objection though, the bill must lie over for at least one day.
At best then, we will have about 24hrs. notice when the bill comes up for a vote or is proposed as an amendment to something else."
Here is the text of S. 2498. If for some reason the link doesn't work for you, go to Thomas.gov & type in "S. 2498" in the search box labeled "bill number". The text is nothing fancy: the only thing it does is change the date of the sunset to September 13th, 2014.
Keep a close watch on the Senate as at most we'll have 24 hour notice that a vote is going to happen. Call, write & e-mail your Senators now. Don't bother going into much detail as they'll only retain a limited amount of info. Tell them simply that if they do not do their damndest to stop S. 2498 &/or any other gun control they will lose your vote. Then tell them that if any gun control is passed their party will lose your vote. Be polite & to the point but make sure you deliver those terms.
Posted by Publicola at June 5, 2004 05:28 AMI've had long discussions with Warner's staff on this issue. For some reason (senility/jealousy for John McCain) something has just snapped in the man.
Actually, we were discussing this very bill at work right before I left for my sojourn south and seeking appropriate legislative vehicles to attach it to. I've got three or for that I suggested and my boss had another three or four. Our feeling is that we can use this bill to get rid of something else that might by making it too controversial and in the process killing two birds (or bad bills) with one vote.
Of course, in the zany world of the Senate - thats a risky strategy - cause you never know what these guys ate for breakfast or how they are going to vote that day.
Posted by: countertop at June 5, 2004 07:12 AMYou made a common error and posted a temporary URL to Thomas, which no longer works. Ther permanent address of the bill's summary and status page is http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d108:s.02498: (the colon at the end is important).

Corrected. & thanks.
Countertop,
I wouldn't try that. It might seem like they'd kill an AWB extension because of some bill they hated (say a repeal of the NFA)but nothing's guaranteed. It definitely doesn't seem like attaching an AWB renewal to another bad bill (say a repeal of the recent theft - er, tax cuts) is a recipe for success. Too much risk of ending up with two bad bills being passed. I'll admit that I'm not up to speed on all the nuances of senate politics, but I know enough that I don't trust one of thoe batsards (even the bastards on our side on most things) any farther than I could throw Kim du Toit's ammo locker.
If you're going to try to attach a poison pill amendment to Feinstein's assault on the Constitution, go for the gusto. Try to repeal Social Security and Medicare.
Oh, and just to make sure the two Senators from the PRK get the point, exempt earthquakes from FEMA assistance.
Tonight I faxed letters to my Senators. I plan to give them a phone call this week.
Our Senators are split: one R, one D, and voted their respective party lines (such as there were) on the amendment to the Protection in Lawful Commerce bill.
Posted by: Thibodeaux at June 7, 2004 08:57 PMI'd like to fax my senators and let them know my true feelings. But, seeing as how that idiot Warner is one of them, I fail to see what good it would do.
